How important is Christmas?
Dear friends, may this season of Advent serve to remind you that Jesus is at the heart of all that we do at Christmas. So then, how important is Christmas to you? Do we make too much of Christmas? Despite all the traditions, commercialisation, experts telling how you can have your best Christmas ever, and all the other drama and carry that goes with the season – can you find an adult or a child who doesn’t know its Jesus birthday? For Christians, safe to say no. For others; the question remains. And why even come to worship on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day? Maybe family tradition; could be an attempt to recapture the so-called good ‘ol days; and yet others go to worship to please loved ones. So the real question is this:
“How important is Jesus to you?”
In one sense, only you can answer that, but your personal answer may or may not line up with the facts of the matter; the real reason why Jesus is so important. See the best and worst, the success and the failures, the healthy and the sick, the young and old; all of us need Jesus, because all of us are helpless to save ourselves. We need Jesus because Jesus will do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. Jesus seeing our helplessness and imperfect lives came to live the perfect life. Even more, to defeat death and the grave and overcome hell itself when he rose again on the third day.
The Lord Jesus is so important, our lives, humanity needs saving, it needs Jesus. And Jesus is the saviour whose birth we remember. The gospel truth be told: no-one is more important to you than Jesus Christ; who is the only way to God. Apart from his living and dying in your place; you can’t know God; you can’t have a loving relationship with God, or come to God in worship, prayer, praise and thanksgiving. So “How important is Christmas?”, first answer the question, “How important is Christ to me?”, and then you can decide how you want to celebrate his birth.
